Causes and Remedies For Jock Itch

By: Bryan Halverson

Jock itch, also termed as Tinea Cruris, is a fungal infection appearing on the skin of the groin area of both sexes, though it is more common in males. It is categorized as a ring shaped rash which is red and severely itchy.

Causes of Jock Itch:

It grows rapidly in moist and warm areas. People who perspire excessively are more likely to get infected as the sweat takes away the skin oils which protect the skin and allows the fungus to prosper. People who wear tight clothes, especially athletes, and sweat a lot have more chance of catching this infection. Obesity is another factor that makes a person more prone for this disease. Jock itch is mildly contagious too as it can be passed by direct contact and sharing towels.

Symptoms of Jock Itch:

It starts with itching in groin region including genitals, thighs, buttocks and anal area. Later, ring shaped, red patches with defined dark outline develop on the skin. The reddened area has burning sensation and the skin of this area peels or flakes with time.

Treatment of Jock Itch:

Mild infection of jock itch can be treated by using anti fungal cream or ointment available over-the-counter. If the symptoms persist and secondary bacterial infection develops due to scratching, then seek doctor's advice for the proper treatment.

Preventions and Care in Jock Itch:

• Keep yourself dry specially the groin area. Avoid using damp towel which you have used to dry your feet. It can spread germs to other body parts. It is better to dry feet in the end. The towel must be washed after every use.

• Try not to wear tight clothes that may cause friction with body. Loose clothes will help in evaporating the moisture in the groin area.

• Avoid sharing towels with others especially when you go to gym. The gym towels may carry the germs to start the infection.

• Take regular bath and always clean the groin region with anti bacterial soap and water. This will keep the bacteria from spreading

• Do not scratch a lot.

• Use hair dryer to blow-dry your private areas. This will prevent fungus from multiplying, Practice this whenever you take bath or shower at home.

• Eat garlic every day as advised by experts because of its anti-fungal properties. It has best affect if eaten fresh and raw but also helps if added in salad dressings.

• Avoid eating yeast in any form as it can also cause the jock itch infection.

• Take care of your personal hygiene. Change underwear daily and also change sweaty and damp clothes as soon as you can. Wash those clothes regularly.

• Consult your doctor if the symptoms increase. Remember, the sooner you will treat it, the easier it will get cured.

Please keep in mind that jock itch will not go away without applying the proper techniques to fight the fungus. The longer that you wait and procrastinate, the more it will spread and itch, making it hard to sleep, work, and in some extreme cases, carry on with a normal life. Apply the recommendations above, and you will be on your way to being itch free.
